Well, this month’s Sisters’ Challenge didn’t work out exactly the way I planned, but my kids love it so much that I’m going to share it anyway. In a perfect world, I would re-do this project to make it perfect, but hey- I’m on a deadline here!
I’ve been wanting to try this kind of PVPP project for awhile (Paint, Vinyl, Paint over, Peel). In this style of project, you paint your base coat in rainbow colors so that’s what will end up showing through in your letters. I’ve seen this used in all sorts of ways, so I finally gave it a try.
Can you tell why I’m not super thrilled with this project? Look closely- my letters bled a lot. Turns out I used some crappy vinyl that didn’t stick very well to my board. Normally I would paint over the letters with the base coat color to “seal” them- but I didn’t see how I could do that with this rainbow method. I crossed my fingers, hoped for the best- and it didn’t quite turn out. Still- from a distance it looks fabulous– and now you know that even craft bloggers have FAILS!
Here’s how you do it:
1. USE GOOD VINYL (see above!)
2. Paint your board in rainbow colors. I just kind of eyeballed it based on the layout of my words. There is not right way to do it- just paint how you feel like painting.
3. Apply your vinyl decal with transfer tape. Push down carefully to make sure it sticks well to the board.
4. Remove transfer tape, leaving vinyl behind. You may want to paint over your vinyl in the base coat color before continuing to “seal” the edges of the letters. That way, if anything bleeds, it will be the color that’s already there.

5. Paint over your vinyl in desired color. I used black craft paint to really make the letters pop.
6. After your top coat is mostly dry, remove the vinyl letters carefully with tweezers.
Now you have a fun decoration to display for a birthday or party! We have some fun countdown blocks the kids use to get ready for their birthday, so this will be joining the blocks.

While I’m sad to see her go, I’m grateful for the help she’s been here and all the creative projects she’s shared. I fully support her in her new piano-teaching efforts and wish her every success in that!
