Just in case I forgot, all the blogs and Pinterest serve to remind me. I actually have a bunch of patriotic crafts that are sitting either half-finished or completely undone…. from last year! This year, I vow to get them all done in time to enjoy them for a week or so!
Yesterday I sat down and pulled out my unfinished wooden star. I made this one for Christmas a few years ago:
That one was a plastic star from the dollar store. I found a wooden one for a few dollars at Michael’s. I’ve seen tin ones, too. Point is, you can find them at lots of places.
Again, I used the tutorial from Ashley at Make It and Love It (found here). I bought some patriotic paper instead of fabric, and paired it with some red, white, and blue ribbon I have had FOREVER. Here’s the final product:
I love how it turned out! I’ve got a few more patriotic crafts coming your way soon, so I hope you’ll check back. Also- not to beg, but I’m getting close to the big 700 followers. If you’re a lurker or a 1st-timer, I’d love to have you follow me! (There just MIGHT be a fun giveaway involved!)
Have a great weekend, all! My mom is coming in to town and I get to see my daughter’s dance recital. She makes the perfect ballerina, don’t you think?
I never said I was creative- just crafty. Occasionally.
I’m really not great at coming up with my own ideas. Instead, I often just copy things that I find in blog-land. I do usually try to put my own spin on projects, but when I saw this “Family” wall hanging at Dittle Dattle, I pretty much loved everything about it.
It’s beautiful- so I made my own. I used my own font, but everything else down to the color scheme is pretty much the same. Oh- here’s something else different. Carrie used leftover molding, and, well, I didn’t have any molding. So I bought this wood at Michael’s for about 87 cents a board. I needed three pieces to complete my project. I cut the boards into uneven pieces- mine were 2 each at 6 1/2, 5 1/2, and 5 inches long and the wood was about 4 inches in width.
Mod Podge the paper on. I am loving black and white these days.
Apply Vinyl. I used the “Harrington” font on my Silhouette to cut the letters.
Attach ribbon with hot glue. I wanted mine to hang at the same level so the ribbon length varied.
Finished! Now all I need is a black curtain rod- or some black spray paint- to get this baby up on my wall. Thanks again, Carrie for the inspiration!

Since this school year began, I’ve had a hard time finding time to create. I have two kids in school for the first time. One is in half-day kindergarten. They are both involved in after-school activities, both on campus and off. Both have homework to do, books to read, spelling words to learn, tests to study for, projects to complete, and poems to memorize.
If you’re a mom of school-aged kids, this sounds familiar. I thought I was busy with three kids at home. And truthfully, I was. But this is a completely different type of busy.
So, considering I spend half of each day in the car or waiting at my children’s place of activity, I’m not home a lot to create. When I am, I’m either exhausted or distracted by things like the mound of dishes in my sink or the piles of laundry I should be folding. (Should being the operative word!) Plus there’s all the “supervising” of homework I have to do. Seriously- it’s crazy!
I also have Sunday School lessons to plan, scriptures to study, exercise to do, and much more.
I know you’re all busy too. What I don’t know is, how do people do it? How do they accomplish all they need to do and still find time and energy to create? I just can’t seem to get it done! When I realize I not only have to make a project, but take photos, edit them, and write a blog post, I’m ready to quit before I even start.
So, while I figure out how this whole kids-in-school thing is going to work with the craft-blogging thing, know I DO have things in the works, and I’m still going to share what I’m doing when I can.
I’m working on re-doing my daughter’s bedroom. It’s very PINK! I’ve got a whole bunch of projects to share, hopefully soon!
I’m also changing up the bedding in my master bedroom. I don’t want to pay for new bedding right now, but I’ve found a way to give my bedroom a whole new look! (If I ever finish sewing…..)
Here’s the “Before”- just to tease you!
Of course, Halloween is coming up, and that means some fun decor, as well as working on costumes. I’m going the easy route this year and buying most things from the store, but I am making bits and pieces of costumes to save a little money.
I’ve even started some of my handmade Christmas gifts! Sorry- no pictures, so I don’t spoil any surprises!
So, I guess creating is going on- just not at the pace I’ve gotten used to. If you have any tips to share about how you balance your family’s needs with your need to create, I’d love to hear them.
My son’s third birthday is on Saturday, and while we’re not having a “party” so to speak, I will be sharing how we are making his day special. So, if you’ve got a kid that loves Mickey Mouse, I hope you’ll stop by next week to see how we celebrated his birthday! Have a great weekend-

Welcome to another installment of “Making My Own”. Okay, how much do you hate spending 50-75 cents on a packet of taco seasoning and it only has like 3 tablespoons of mix in it? And how many times have you thought you had taco seasoning and after dumping all your spice packets on the floor realize that you are out?
THIS is why I started making my own taco seasoning! And guess what? I had all the ingredients at home already, which meant those times that I was ‘out’, I really wasn’t!
I adapted this recipe from 5dollardinners.com because I thought it was a little Chili Powder heavy. I have since used it in 3-4 recipes calling for taco seasoning and I feel GREAT knowing it cost me less and taste even a little better than the stuff you find in the store, plus I’m sure it’s healthier. I read somewhere that the packets have silica in them…. no bueno!
3/4 T chili powder
1 T cumin
1 T onion powder
1 T garlic powder
1/4 tsp crushed red pepper
And now that I’ve started making a lot of my own spices and mixes I’ve been recycling empty bottles. Recognize what kind of container this used to be?
If you have anything you’ve ever thought about making on your own, comment and I’ll try it out for you!
We’re linking up this week, so come party with us!
